I was initially very nervous about travelling to Mexico for major surgery but after a lot of research found that Christus Muguerza Sur (CMS) has an incredible reputation with cutting edge facilities. When we travelled there, they actually managed to exceed my very high expectations.
When I traveled for my surgery I was in extreme pain due to the PE causing an 80% blockage of my right ventricle in my heart. The hospital staff took immediate action to make sure that I was comfortable as well as my wife. I was admitted through the ER (due to complications from the heart blockage) and the doctors and staff there were incredible. Not as important, but worth noting that the rooms were huge, very nice with state-of-the-art equipment and private.
Once I was admitted things got even better. The staff were truly incredible with everyone there taking great pains to make sure that both my wife AND I were always comfortable (they have family suites with adjoining rooms with beds and provisions for spouses or parents to travel with the patients which was such a godsend). They made sure that we understood any tests or pre-op procedures and walked us both through the entire procedure and plan for recovery. The doctors and staff there were truly a cohesive team working so perfectly together, it was hard not to feel like the only patient in the hospital where everyone knew exactly what was needed and what was happening at all times.
The main takeaway is that the facility itself is absolutely cutting edge with the latest technologies to improve patient outcomes. More importantly the people there were so genuinely caring that it made the experience better than I could have hoped for. CMS is absolutely a world-class institution in the center of one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico.
One last note for US patients that may not have insurance or have significant out-of-pocket expenses expected, the cost of the procedure (before my insurance) was about 75% less than anywhere in the US.
