I'm an American but was living in that part of the world at the time & was determined to have the repair (surgery) even though I'm a much older than most who have this done. I did some research, watched some of his Youtube videos and decided, since he was very close-by & also that my insurance would likely never approve me for surgery in the US, that i could go there and simply pay for it myself. So, I did just that and have No regrets.
Dr Darlong is very easy to talk to, though negotiating the Indian phone system is a bit different than what I was used to in the US. It was still relatively easy to get in touch with him. He has also been very responsive to my occasional emails; he's not only my PE doctor but I consider him a friend as well.
The hospital where he worked (at that time) Fortis NOIDA gave me clear written estimates of the charges which was with-in about $200 or so of the final Bill to me. It was a very reasonable price compared to that in the West.
The Nurses and Doctors there were fantastic! Not only the nurses but the even the doctors checked on me several times each day! I'm sure they are the same at his new hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Inst. I couldn't have asked for a more attentive or kinder group of medical professionals.
As far as the PE repair goes, I'm still carrying the bars around in my chest, I'll have them removed sometime later this year (2017) but I've been pretty pleased with the results. There's a small dent where there used to be a deep dent(I'm probably too critical)...I'm no longer embarrassed to walk around with my shirt off. I think it looks a lot like Hugh Jackman's (Wolverine) chest before the 'roids.
I've since then been very active, have been thrown twice from a horse ( I ride almost every day) and the Bars are still where they're supposed to be.
All in all, I'm very happy with my decision to go to India as well as the surgery itself.
