SML resident undergoes experimental surgery

Surgery has been part of life for Richard “Rich” Cole. Since a young age Cole has struggled with a genetic disorder called Pectus Excavatum. It prevents proper circulation of oxygen, causing constant fatigue.

Most of the treatments involve corrective surgeries to allow for more open air pathways to breathe. His first surgery occurred at age five to correct the condition using a stud inserted behind the sternum. As Cole matured, so did medical treatments for Pectus Excavatum.
