Let me see where do I start. Dr. Obermeyer was our second opinion Dr. and I can not say enough positive things about him. If you want an amazing Dr. that knows everything there is to know about the Nuss procedure then he is your guy. When having something like this done, specially to your child to me the most important thing is knowledge and experience. At CHKD they definitely have that. Dr. Obermeyer answered all my questions with ease helped us to feel more comfortable with the entire experience. While at our consultation Dr. Obermeyer felt that my sons chest would probably not look perfect because of the rotation of his sternum. We were all pleasantly surprised to find that he got the chest to look fantastic! Its perfect in my eyes! My son did so well that we were released on the 2nd day and off all pain meds by day 6. I don't think that would have been possible without the wisdom of Dr. Obermeyer. He believes in keeping it simple and I 100% believe that is what helped my son and his speedy recovery. We actually had a 7 hour drive home to Pennsylvania and Dr. Obermeyer made sure we had means to contact him in case of emergency. We are now 4 weeks post op and my son is doing fantastic couldn't have done it without Dr. Obermeyer and I would recommend him to anyone that is thinking about surgery well worth the drive. Thank you so much Dr. Obermeyer you are the best!!

I don’t even know where to begin when saying how amazing Dr. Obermeyer is. Both my brother and I were born with a severe case of pectus carinatum. We both noticed it around the time we were in middle school and it just seemed to get worse as we grew older. This caused my brother and I to be very self-conscious all through high school and me into college. I am 22 years old (female) and my brother is 17. We were both interested in getting some information on having the surgery to get it fixed, so we made an appointment with Dr. Obermeyer to drive 5 hours from Maryland to Norfolk, VA. The nurses took pictures from all angles of the protrusion and also measurements. As a female, not once did I ever feel uncomfortable in Dr. Obermeyers presence or any of his nurses. He described to us in detail exactly how he would correct the protrusion, how long we would be in the hospital, how long the recovery time would be, etc. I was happy to hear that I didn’t need any bars or hardware put in. After talking it over with our family we decided to go through with it. Both of our surgeries were scheduled for Dec. 5, 2017 and they had us come in on the 4th to get some final tests done and so Dr. Obermeyer could draw out where he would make the incision so we had a visual. I think my brother went back for surgery around 7:00AM and then I went back around 12:00PM that same day. I don’t know many doctors who would be willing to do two of these surgeries back-to-back when it is so hard on your hands. Dr. Obermeyer made sure they updated our family about every hour so they knew what was going on. After the surgery was complete Dr. Obermeyer checked on us every day to make sure we weren’t having any issues. The nurses and staff at the hospital were INCREDIBLE. It seemed like there was always somebody in our room checking our vitals, making sure we had something to eat or drink, making sure my family was comfortable, etc. When we were released to go home on the 3rd day Dr. Obermeyer made sure we had a way to contact him in case we ran into any problems at home. I struggled with nausea and loss of appetite for a while after I got home and when I reached out to him for suggestions he responded immediately. I couldn’t have been blessed with a better doctor than Dr. Obermeyer. My brother and I appreciate everything he has done for us and already have so much more confidence and it’s only been a little over a month. He told us not to expect a perfectly flat result, but I can honestly say that he made it look PERFECT! Thank you so much Dr. Obermeyer!!

Oh my gosh! Where do I even begin. We noticed the summer of 2014 when our son was 12 that his chest started to look different (caving in). I immediately started doing research and learned he had pectus excavatum. I started going to doctors for options. I was not happy with what I was hearing about the procedures that they would do for this condition, plus many didn't do the surgery as often as I would like (unexperienced). My son's pediatrician put me in contact with a family in my area thats son was seeing a doctor in Virginia (we are in Charlotte NC) for the same problem. After talking with her, I made an appointment to go see Dr. Obermeyer up in Norfolk at CHKD.. It was one of the best decisions of my life. We started seeing him in October 2014 and took my daughter as well as she complained that her chest bone stuck out. Sure enough she had the opposite condition called pectus carinatum. She would not need surgery but would need a brace to wear for a certain amount of time per day (at night). With our son, we decided first to try the "vacuum bell". We knew up front that we would probably not get the best results with this but wanted to try it (I was still nervous about surgery and how it would affect my son's life). We did get some improvement but very little. My son did get discouraged and stopped wearing it and with doing that, his chest went back to what it was if not worse (as he was to get older, he would probably continue to get worse). So at this point, we decided to do the surgery. Dr. Obermeyer explained everything to us so well that we were at ease. My son was starting to get very self-conscious about his chest, even with his shirt on. When I told my friends/family he was having the surgery, the asked why have the surgery so far away. I said that I was going to go where the best surgeon was, no matter how far away. Everything with the surgery went awesome and I give Dr. Obermeyer all the credit. He had our son doing exercises and breathing exercises to do prior to the surgery that really helped with his recovery. Typically kids stay 5 days in the hospital after surgery. We went home on the 3rd day post-op. Our son even stopped having to take pain medicine a few days after getting home--again I credit Dr. Obermeyer with his fast recovery. Our son's results are outstanding and I can see the confidence in my son even at 3 months post-op. We can't wait to see the final results!! Dr. Obermeyer's knowledge and skill needs to be praised, as he is helping so many kids.

Dr Obermeyer is one of the best doctors we have ever met and the finest surgeon. It took us a while to finally decide to go thru with this procedure. He immediately put us at ease with his knowledge of the Nuss procedure and attention to detail. We felt confident entrusting our son in his care. We are now 3 months post-op with 2 bars in and our son is doing very well. I highly recommend both Dr Obermeyer and CHKD. The only reason I did not rate the cosmetic outcome a 10 is because our son is assymetrical and his outcome is not perfect. He looks much better than he did and breathing has increased for sure. Dr O warned us not to expect perfect results, he said to expect good. He was right. We are very happy with the amount of correction he was able to achieve.
